    minor threat appresh
I want to tell you a little story
Cause it makes me warm inside
It's about some friends growing up
And all the things they tried
I'm not talking about staple shit
    They went for something more
I guess it was too much dreaming
    Too much to hope for
    One day something funny happened
But it scared the shit out of me
Their heads went in different directions
And their friendship ceased to be

I'm telling you I want it to work
    I don't like being hurt
    Something's not right inside
And I can't always put it aside
What can we do, what can we do?

    Try

I guess I make too much shit
Someday we'll look back and laugh

    Mr. Present, go away
Come back and fuck with us some other day
    Mr. Feelings, run and hide
You have no right to what you feel inside
    Motherfuckers, quick to kiss
Talk you shit, but don't fuck with this
All I want to know is
Am I holding on? Am I moving on?
What can we do, what can we do?

so it's pretty cool, you don't reeally have to worry about music being too loud here - like, the guy next door just blasts porn alllll the time - like i thought he was just 'doing it' a lot, until one night when i heard the same thing rewind a bunch of times. i thought he was just having a TON of sex but it was just porn

    it's fucking cold in philadelphia
Is it cold in FL? Baltimore and Philly have both been cold the last couple days - I don't really understand - it was 65 yesterday here. Totally weird.

Derek and I have finally made it to philly after missing various public transportation (3 of them) pickups to get to "pikesville, md" for a rideshare - wound up riding chinatown and hoofing around brewers hill, some industrial areas and the train yard for hours. chinatown was about 3 hours late - still in good moods, we just sat on a hill overlooking the highway and skyline with some other randos waiting for the bus. Got a lot of sewing done as well as read most of "burn collector." Every time I read al burian, my brain starts to work like his and I think I like it - he's got this strange fascination with the mundane, that when applied to people watching those waiting to get on a bus (the chinatown, no less) so much more interesting.

We got into town and met up with steve's "gf," "brittany" - she brought us back to here place and we ate spicy tofu/pepper/rice and watched "that 70's show," before derek and I hoofed it over to the first unitarian church to see LIGHTNING BOLT. the show was sold out, so we were able to get some wristbands from some folks who were leaving and get it for free. Derek observed that it's okay to get in for free when the show's sold out - they couldn't have made any more money for the band from the door if it's sold out - hell they probably calculate these things (we can fit 300 people in here and the show's $10, if we have more or less than $3000, somethings up...) so, recalling counting down tills at work, we kindly slipped in, taking the paid spots of someone who left.

Oh yeah, Lightning Bolt was fucking awesome.

Best friends day was the shit

Got in touch with Pablo the .5 second we arrived in RVA and were happy to hear he was inviting us over to dinner. Turns out he was just recently back in town, housesitting at his parents while they were away. Funny teenage references were abundant. anywho, he cooked us a southern homestyle dinner that couldn't be beaten and all passed food around the dining room table whilst sipping 40's of malt liquor. Beautiful.

The only day of bfd I reall participated in was hadads, and it was awesome - it got rained out too - No BS Brass Band were something totally amazing - a brass group with a rock drummer playing originals and covers from Rush, Agent Orange, Michael Jackson, etc. It was so cool. Everyone was wiling out and grooving to the tubas.

I also ran into and hung out with some cool kids from chicago (rat patrol, in fact) who we also wound up running into in DC today, around the washington monument, downtown, and inside a smithsonian museum several times. Cool peoples, we'll probably hang out while we're in chi-town (wud up)

Side note - if you're ever being a menace in the north east, don't go to cosi - it's a panera ripoff shitty weird place that doesn't make any sense. They preach being green (like all businesses who want to survive the recession) and have basically no vegan options. They had about seven salads on the menu and ONLY ONE was even vegetarian (the greek), I ordered one sans parmesan and feta and it come out with parmesan - to boot I spent about 7 bucks on it. So not wanting to waste food or any of my "not money," i decided I'd ask them to make it again without cheese - first off the told me there wasn't cheese, which there definitely was - i had eaten a bite, in fact by accident. So they threw it out immediately and after arguing with the line cook made me another, this time also with cheese. I didn't notice until I got back to the table, and I didn't want to go through it again so i gave elise the salad and looked mad.

bummer. but at least i'm feeling good!

    Roads Hit
So backtracking for a second, thanks a ton to everyone who wished me a happy birthday on monday, and to everyone who came out to the show at Hoops. As advertised, it was Nø Qualms last show. Why? you may ask:

Jon Con is on his way back to Boston with Fast Death, Derek and I are leaving to travel for awhile (the whole country basically, up the east coast, across west to chicago, diagonally southwest to LA, then up the whole west coast and back. Holler if you want to hang out: (386) 717.2548.

I'm excited for the change of scenery and the prospect of new friends met and hung solidly with.

Coffee/food: i thought I'd either need to save up a shit ton of money to be able to buy a coffee every morning, or to simpy (haha, yeah right) kick the habit, but I didn't count on my third option: I acquired two french press/travel mugs - we're taking dry coffee (and can steal it easily enough on the road), and all we'll need is hot water (aquirable at gas stations usually) I'm also taking a homemade "hobo stove" that is basically a water chestnut can drilled out for ventillation and heat dispersion, with burning denatured alcohol (aquirable at any paint store), as well as a camp cookware set, so we can heat our own water, as well as grill up dumpstered veggies.

Also being packed are: knife, paint marker, sewing kit, flashlight, camp tarp (with tie ropes), sleeping bag, emergency money, and some clothes (for cold weather too, we won't be back until october and I bet seattle is cold then.)

First stop will be richmond for best friends day, so if you'll be there come drink 40's and hang out with me!

Otherwise, if you'd like some mail here and there send me yr address to ryanfromdeland at gmail dot com.

I love a lot of you...

    ----------
What does this really mean? I know most of us already won't buy coca-cola for human-rights violations (including, of course, the hired murder of labor leaders in Colombia). I know a lot of my friends are vegan too. We "vote with our dollar," even if our dollar isn't that much. It seems like a lot of us are slowing down and buying in lately. I've heard the word faggot used casually as much as I did in high school. About a year and a half ago almost all of my friends started smoking. At first it was American Spirits and rolleys - purportedly the "conscious" choice. - and now it's camels, etc. This whole trend is a slippery slope - I've seen many quit being vegan too.

Of course this choice rests on everyone. I'm just bummed that my friends are "norming out" - some of which inspired me to become vegan, or told me about how fucked up coke or mcdonalds or ________ was. If any of these things ever really meant anything to you - please think about who you are giving your money to - and for what.

For those of us who drink alcohol (myself included) there are things to be considered.

Anheuser-Busch InBev Corporation has a shorter list of problems. On the surface, they do own and operate the Busch Gardens and Discovery Cove parks, that make money with their "entertainment zoos," exploiting captive animals. I'm not able to find too much else aside from the usual big corporation stuff - as a sidenote, all AB Beers are vegan. So if this is acceptable to you, A/B beers may be for you when you're getting some beers at the bodega. PBR may also be acceptable, as their own brand, but they are partially outsource-brewed by SABMiller.

Microbreweries are also a good choice, but make sure to check which are vegan - barnivore.com is a good way to look them up. As is googling "(beer name) vegan". As a quick reference - all german beers are vegan by default following the German Purity Law of 1516 that essentially limited what a German-Produced beer could be made from (water, barley, hops, yeast). Also, strangely enough, Guiness Extra-Stout is vegan. Other vegan beers I like:

Weyerbacher Brewing Company: Merry Monks (9.3% abv , Trippel), Blithering Idiot (11.1% abv, English Barleywine)
North Coast Brewing Company: Old Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout (9% abv - Russian Imperial Stout and my favorite beer), Scrimshaw Pilsener (4.4% abv, German-style Pilsener)
Dogfish Head Brewery: 90-Minute IPA (9% abv, Imperial IPA), Chicory Stout (5.2% abv, American Stout)
Rogue Ales: Mocha Porter (5.2% abv, American Porter), Dead Guy Ale (6.5% abv, Helles Bock)
Orlando Brewing: Blackwater Dry Porter (?% abv, American Porter), Eagle Stout (5.8% abv, American Stout), Miami Weiss (?% abv, Hefeweizen), Pale Ale (?% abv, American Pale Ale)

Obviously there are a ton more out there, and obviously these are more expensive than your usual 18-rack of High Life, but you've got to consider what that cost means. It's more expensive to eat at Ethos than it is to eat at McDonald's, and maybe you'll eat out less or drink less as a result, but there's a reason behind it.

R.J. Reynolds Tobacco (the other industry giant) doesn't have much better of a track record. From the National Farm Worker Ministry - "R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company is the second-largest tobacco company in the United States, manufacturing about one of every three cigarettes sold in the country. In 2006 Reynolds American Inc. had sales in excess of $8.5 billion worldwide. While big tobacco makes billions, tobacco farmworkers live in poverty, face racism and harassment, nicotine poisoning, lethal pesticides, staggering deft, and have hardly any labor and human rights protections." - They've come into the attention of several human rights and labor organizations for slave-like conditions in the fields, among the usual laundry list of questionable-at-best lobbying practices and "combative attitudes" (according to internal memos) to the spread of the knowledge of the adverse health effects of second-hand-smoke.
